HUGS Camp : a documentary about love.

For one week each July, Haw River State Park becomes home to HUGS Camp, a brilliant summer camp for young people with unique abilities. Campers with disabilities are paired with teen “helper campers” and enjoy the common camp experiences of swimming, mess hall dining, campfires and sing-alongs. Helping Understand God Through Sharing (HUGS) is hosted by the Episcopal Diocese of NC, and as one camper in the film states, “It’s how the world should be.”

Philip and I are grateful for our opportunity to spend 2 days at HUGS Camp this past July. We made new friends, witnessed a stellar talent show, and experienced God’s love over and over again. It’s truly a place like no other; hard to describe in words. We’re hoping our film can give a small glimpse of  how beautiful HUGS camp truly is. Thank you to Meaghan Kelly and the welcoming staff and campers. We’re honored to have met each of you.

will roberts - Hi Guys,

Thanks for making this film. I was a helper camper and later a counselor at HUGS in the mid-90s, my older sister was at the first HUGS and later was camp coordinator and I think camp nurse a time or two. This is still the experience that I point to as my singular life-defining moment. I’m marrying a priest in the diocese of NC this december and and will be moving back to the area and re-engaging with HUGS is at the top of my to-do list. Thank you for reminding me just how urgent this is!

Very Best,
——WILL ROIBERTS

Rhiannon - Like Will, I was at HUGS in the mid-90′s as a helper camper. Those weeks were frustrating, scary, exhausting, and fun.
I’m so glad to see that it is still around, and that Toma is still entertaining everybody!

Charlie - This is tremendous, guys. It reminds me of a book, Living Gently in a Violent World, by Stanley Hauerwas and Jean Vanier, who reflect on the theological witness that a special needs community offers. [http://www.amazon.com/Living-Gently-Violent-World-Reconciliation/dp/0830834524]

Hollis - This was my first year at HUGS camp as a helper-camper and it has truly made me see the world with a new set of eyes! You guys really know how to capture the most amazing moments, and I now have them to look back on and can I watch them over and over again.
Thank you!

Chad & Katie : A Documentary About Love

This weekend we filmed Chad & Katie’s wedding in downtown Raleigh. The wedding itself was just gorgeous (wait til you see our footage of Katie stepping off of the trolley or the inside of Sacred Heart Cathedral!) but what really made this wedding so memorable for us was the bride, the groom, and their incredible families. We’ll share more from their Raleigh wedding when we post their highlights film in a couple weeks. Until then, we invite you to get to know this adorable couple through their Documentary About Love.

Chad gifted Katie with this film for her birthday in April. They’d already hired us to film their wedding and he surprised her with their own Documentary About Love, which they’d show at their rehearsal dinner! We got a sneak peek into their lives in Raleigh, filled with heated games of Uno, their sweet dogs, and dates to North Hills. Getting to know them this well before their wedding was so much fun, because when this weekend rolled around we were genuinely excited to see our new friends say “I Do.”

Lulu Turns Six : A Pool Party : Raleigh, NC

This past winter we had the opportunity to work with a fun-loving family, filming their daughter’s fourth birthday at the Umstead Hotel in Cary, NC. If you didn’t see the festive film we made, you can watch it here. They called us this summer about filming their eldest daughter’s birthday party and we just knew it would be memorable! Lulu, who turned 6, celebrated poolside with friends and family.  Her party was packed with laughter, magic and animals (ponies and parrots to name a few)! It wouldn’t be complete without an airplane circling the home with a special birthday message for Lulu. Enjoy!

Meredith - This is precious, you guys! I love it!

Sarah S. - That film was great! It looked like a great day to be 6. And you have repeat clients – congratulations! (I want to use the pool and have a pirate at my next birthday…)

Congratulations Trish!

So,  in the midst of grilling out and celebrating the holiday (Happy 4th of July everyone!),  Philip and I decided it was high time to draw for the winner of our Documentary About Love giveaway (which ended on June 30). We were so excited to draw Trish’s name from our list of entries! I wish we’d filmed the drawing because someone may think this was rigged, based on the outcome. You see, Trish is one of my dearest friends and we can’t wait to film a Documentary About Love with her and Jarrett! I’m inspired by the way Trish lives her life to the fullest and it will be so fun to capture their love for nature, cycling, their community, and especially their love for each other! Congratulations Trish! Thanks to everyone who entered our first contest!

Life with Tess : a documentary about love.

What a joy it was to spend the afternoon with Jill, Richard & Tess!  Oh, sweet Tess!  She can (almost literally) brighten up your day just by smiling (or talking!) at you. Having known Richard & Jill prior to Tess’s arrival into their life, it’s been great to see the evolution of this dynamic family.  Richard was Philip’s mentor during his years as a teacher and Philip observed Tess’s first year through iPhone photos Richard would proudly bring to school. We were so thrilled to capture the whole family on film and especially lovely little Tess!

Ironically, this Japanese song is so fitting for this film. Philip picked this song because of its boisterous, fun tempo and melody. When he realized the song was actually sung in Japanese, we laughed! It was almost like Tess talking to us! We didn’t know what she was saying, and it didn’t really matter, because we could tell she was bubbling with joy and love.

Song :  Shugo Tokumaru : ”Parachute”

Becky - John and I loved this video! We couldn’t stop laughing and smiling. Our favorite part is the “surprise” at the end. I think my parents felt a little like Tess’s parents and it is so neat to capture that on film. What a keepsake! They will all love looking back in the years to come.

Arli - I absolutely LOVE this video. It makes my heart smile and I just think you guys did such an awesome job of capturing this little family with Tess at the heart of it. Love you guys! Arli

Raleigh Wedding Photographer - Wow this is a cute video! Cute kid! :)
